Extra-curricular
Activities
Endeavour of contemporary educational
institution lies not only in making its progeny educated individuals
but also in adding cultural pedagogical milieu imparting knowledge.
This makes knowledge a part of learning and development. To collate
this cultural dimension to the students of Maharaja Agrasen College,
the Extra Curricular Committee and Student's Cultural Council
made a conscious and commendable effort in the year gone by.
At the beginning of the year 2004-05, our College Cultural Council
was aware of the busy calendar that awaited them. Under the excellent
guidance of the Extra Curricular Committee, the Council was ready
to take up the challenges of not only maintaining the standards
that were set by them in the previous years, but also of providing
an eventful cultural calendar for the year. This year the treble
of Orientation (Fresher's Day), the Independence Day celebration
and the Annual Cultural Festival Plexus - 05 were organized consummately.
In tandem with the cultural council, various other societies of
the college played a crucial role in adding the cultural dimension
as part of education. The year also saw the genesis of the 'Film
and Theatre Society' which though still a bud, will prove to be
a great exposure for the students in future to the vastly diverse
field of art, theatre and drama.
The cultural year commenced with the Fresher's Day celebration
when all the new comers got a chance to display their talents
in the form of singing, dance and skits etc. The highlight of
the day was Mr. & Ms. Fresher, which deservingly went to Pranav
Malasi of English (Hons.) and Anchala Paliwal of English (Hons.)
respectively. It was only one and a half month into the new session
and already it was the time to put together an event to celebrate
the 58th Independence Day. The programme that took place on 13th
of August 2004 commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag
by our OSD Dr. S. Bala Bawa. Musical performances were followed
by the National Anthem, providing patriotic niche to the function.
With winter already well set and the mercury levels dropping,
nostalgia of last year's cultural festival was on prowl. So the
major and most awaited event, the Annual Cultural Festival 'Plexus
- 2005 was decided to be on 10th and 11th of February 2005. Keeping
in mind the previous year's standards, this two-day extravaganza
needed to accommodate all its main events.
Under the vigilant and collective effort of the Extra-curricular
Committee, teachers and non-teaching staff and the Cultural Council,
various inter-college events were included such Tango (Western
Dance competition), Swar Sangam (Light Vocal Music), Ad-Mag (Ad
show), Kaleidoscope (Fashion Show), Masks (Face painting) etc.
On the 10th February, the first day of Plexus -2005, Guest of
Honour was Mr. S. K. Sarkar. The day started off with the classical
dance performance by Sumedha, alumnus of our College. Next in
queue were the performances byvarious
departments of our College. Where the centre stage was occupied
by the Ad-Mag show afterwards, Darpan (Mehndi) and Tarang (Rangoli)
went simultaneously offstage. Next on charts were Kaleidoscope
(Fashion Show) and Sa-Re-Ga (Antakshari). Where the Fashion Show
added the 'style' on the one hand, on the other, Antakshari laid
a musical foundation for the highlight of the day, the Star Night.
The Checkmate band rocked the evening with a mixed song selection
from the contemporary as well as the sounds from the past few
decades.
Second day of Plexus, 11th of February started off with 'Time
Out', the filler's hub. Various hidden artists awaited this platform
and certainly made most of this opportunity presented to them.
With Swar Sangam and Tango (Western Dance) to follow, the day
was shaping up nicely to stage Brecht, the Street Theatre competition,
where various problems and issues of democratic India were addressed.
The revelries culminated in JAM session which was by far the best
and eagerly awaited part of the day. Certainly it was a perfect
way to end this two-day extravaganza.
This year not only the cultural council but also the various cultural
societies of the college were busy coping up with their respective
event calendars. Anant (Theatre Group), Visage (Fashion Society),
Promsoc (Western Dance group) and Film and Theatre society, all
participated in various competitions in and outside our college.
Street theatre has been a radical medium to expose what stales
in the fresh looking society. Anant, one of our college's street
theatre groups, was active throughout the year. They performed
at IIT Delhi, Gargi college, Hansraj college and Kamla Nehru college.
This year, the group performed "Ek Sacchai Yeh Bhi Hai",
'Aashadeep', 'Ek Khamosh Cheekh' etc. Two other societies, Visage
(Fashion Society) and Promsoc (Western Dance) also performed and
competed in other colleges. Visage depicted innovative themes
like Ashoka, Egypt, Jute etc. performing at IIT Delhi and Plexus-05.
Promsoc also performed at Kalindi College, Hindu College and Plexus-05.
The academic year 2004-05 also the inception of Film and Theatre
Society. The Society aimed to expose the students to the depths
of theatre art. A fortnight's workshop helped the students to
develop and sharpen their theatrical skills. Bertolt Brecht's
'A Good Person of Schezwan' was taken up for discussions and theatrical
perspectives were evolved in the light of the play.
To eulogise the efforts of the Extra Curricular Committee and
Student's Cultural Council, teamwork and planning will be the
most appropriate words. With new societies being formed and older
ones in top gear, it will not take long for our college to emerge
as a cultural giant in the University of Delhi. Though there may
have been errors and omissions, but they all are parts of the
learning curve, because to err is only human.
